Birmingham City Council has chosen Co-wheels Car Club to take over the city’s car share operation for the next three years starting next week. This will mean that we will offer 20 low emission cars across the city which members can borrow instead of having to buy their own car. As well as our cars in South Birmingham, Co-wheels will be expanding to operate from 10 fixed bays in the city centre, taking over from the current operator Enterprise Car Club. In the coming months Co-wheels will also be setting up new ‘floating’ bays operating from named streets but without a fixed parking spot. This will enable us to cover a much larger area of the city centre. Co-wheels is already signing up new members who want to use the service when it starts, offering a special membership launch offer at www.co-wheels.org.uk/birmingham As well as vehicles across Birmingham, members have access to more than 600 cars and vans in 50 towns and cities across the UK from Aberdeen down to Bristol and the south coast. Councillor Waseem Zaffar, Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment at Birmingham City Council, said: “The introduction of this new expanded car club offering from Co-wheels will support the important work we are doing to tackle air pollution in Birmingham, providing people with access to clean, low-emission vehicles when they need one. “An increasing number of Birmingham’s younger population are moving away from traditional car ownership, so car clubs provide them with the flexibility they need when it comes to travel options – and, with national figures showing that each car club vehicle defers the purchase of 11 private cars, it will also help reduce congestion on our city’s road network.” Co-wheels Managing Director Richard Falconer said: ”We are delighted to be working with Birmingham City Council to help bring cleaner and more environment friendly transport alternatives to support the Birmingham Connected vision for the future of transport in Birmingham. “Initially we will be offering low emission city cars, ultra-low hybrid electric cars and a van but we will also explore the potential for more zero emission electrics in the city."
